La Torre sul Mare is an impressive and historical tower with a private garden built just few meters from the sea by order of Pope Clement XI (1649-1721, his insignia is still carved in the stone facade) on Monte Calcagno and belonged to the Albani family. From the terrace you can enjoy an amazing panorama and still notice the stone seats for the guards on the top floor in order to sight enemy or pirate ships coming from the Dalmatian coast.
According to the old local people, the tower was “discovered” and then bought by Adolfo de Bosis (1863-1924), a native poet of Ancona, who used to spend his summer vacations in Portonovo, in the current Conero Mountain National Park and took inspiration for many of his famous lyrics in this tower.
The small house next to the tower, called “La Casetta”, was built in 1915, but recently both of them have been fully restored by the current owners.
Within a short walking distance you can enjoy swimming, rowing (boat rental is available on the beach) or going for a walk and visit many famous churches or the hotel Fortino Napoleonico, which used to be a fort built around in 1810.
Entering the gate to the garden that leads to the tower you will follow the stone path to the entrance and get to a vaulted hall where you will see an original wooden door, dating back to the 18th century.
In the living room there are a white sofa-bed, few armchairs, an astonishing number of books and a Steinway baby-grand piano and from here you can access to a bathroom with shower.
A slate stairway leads you to the first floor where there are a one-bed bedroom and a double bedroom, and a WC with sink on the landing. On the second floor there are a large double bedroom (but it is possible to add additional beds) with WC and sink and a one-bed bedroom (but it is possible to add another bed here too) without bathroom. This room has a wooden staircase that gets you to the terrace.
There is also a very pleasant hot/cold water shower in the garden.
Due to the massive walls of the tower, there is no WI-FI, the TV signal is not good and the only TV-set with a good signal is in La Casetta.
